Figures released by the Department for Education show that academies permanently exclude twice as many pupils than local authority schools.
One of the major concerns that campaigners against academies have is that by overt and covert means the school population is massaged to remove those pupils who are considered less likely to do well in GCSE’s and thus affect the academy’s ratings.

A Freedom of Information request gained access to the actual number of exclusions for each academy.
It shows some disturbing figures. While the local authority rate for permanent exclusions is .14% and all academies are double this at .3% some academies exclude far higher numbers.
8 academies exclude more than 1% of their pupils with All Saints Academy Dunstable excluding 3.24%
The list, sorted by % of the school population permanently excluded, is below.
This is one more reason why it is urgent that the academies programme is halted for a thorough investigation into its impact on education to be held.

The figures are worse if “x” is given a score of 1 or 2; presumably these academies would have submitted “0” if they had no permanent exclusions. For example, if Chelsea Academy had 2 permanent exclusions, its figure would be 1.23%
