The hurricane of the financial crisis has provided the opportunity for the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government to continue the neoliberal reorganisation of the school system in England which Thatcher began. In contrast to Labour’s reliance on centralised prescription and regulation, the key principle of the Coalition’s strategy is to extend supply-side school autonomy.
