It seems that only 1 in 10 academies can genuinely claim to be achieving even quite good results for disadvantaged pupils.

Unfortunately for academy supporters, one result of this narrowing down of curriculum and opting for easier ‘equivalent’ qualifications has been a very poor result for academies in terms of the Ebacc.

The government have set 35% 5A*-Cs with English and Maths (or equivalent) as the floor target for all schools. In other words, below this schools become ready targets for compulsory conversion to academies. Nationally, 1 in 34 maintained secondary schools are below the floor. For academies, the ratio is 1 in 7.

Under the previous government, all kinds of qualifications were officially designed ‘equivalent’ to GCSE A*-C grades, without any proper quality control to ascertain whether they matched a C in quality. The present government are in process of curtailing this, but don’t appear to have noticed the extent to which academies exploit the ‘equivalents’ far more than other schools.
