Defend Our Schools; Defend Our Community

There is a distinct possibility that Dorothy Barley Junior School will become an academy. If this is allowed to happen there will be massive changes, with no way back, and huge implications for the school’s staff and students. This will mean that it will no longer be part of the family of schools in Barking and Dagenham, a policy fought for and strongly defended by the Authority and virtually all Headteachers.

The NUT welcomes the news that the Secretary of State has withdrawn his appeal against the High Court’s ruling in respect of the academisation of The Warren comprehensive school in Chadwell Heath, Romford. This is a significant development and the first legal brake that has been applied to the DfE’s undemocratic forced academy agenda.

The report of the ‘consultation’ over the forced academisation of Dorothy Barley Junior School was published on 7 February 2014. It shows that parents, staff, community members and the local MP Margaret Hodge, are overwhelmingly against removal of the school from democratically accountable local authority oversight

The High Court has ruled in favour of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham halting the Secretary of State’s decision to convert The Warren Comprehensive School into an academy against the wishes of local residents.
