Officials from the three teaching Unions (NUT, NASUWT and ATL) and UNISON (representing support staff) met with their members at Neston High School on the 18th October. 43 opposed the proposal, 4 abstained – no-one was in favour of seeing the school become an Academy.

In some Tory local authorities all schools have been advised to become academies, with some encouraging academy chains to take over all their schools.

In the 40 states that have charter schools, 24 of them require that teachers in those schools participate in the state’s retirement system. But in the other 16 states, the retirement benefits for charter teachers vary enormously, with some employers contributing nothing.

Academies/free schools received an additional £855,000,000 funding in 2010-11. But at the same time, Children & Families received £829,000,000 less.
