Parents who ran a “Hove vs Gove” campaign against plans to turn their local comprehensive into an academy were celebrating a landmark victory today.
Governors at Hove Park School in East Sussex voted unanimously this week against plans to convert the 1,600-pupil school into an academy, after protests from parents and teachers including a one-day strike which closed the school this summer.

Hove Park Governors Vote to Reject Academy Status

Statement from Hands Off Hove Park School campaign group:

“The parents, carers and members of the community that make up Hands Off Hove Park School are delighted and thrilled that the governors have ultimately made the right decision and voted no to academy status. This is an excellent result for the whole of this school community but also for all schools across Brighton & Hove.

Nicky Morgan has given her first interview since schools have started, and has talked about considering for-profit education. She acknowledges that many people would not be happy with the idea, but says she has “left the door open to the introduction of for-profit schools, saying it was a policy on which she was happy to take further advice’

A London council has suspended an elected NUT official. Julie Davies, Haringey NUT branch secretary and a vocal supporter of the Save Downhills anti academy campaign, was suspended just before the end of the summer term. This week the NUT will challenge the Council at the High Court.
