Primary academies in trust

From billy23:

Does anyone have any information on or experience of a family of primaries becoming an academy as a group or trust?

I have no direct experience of this, but I am sure it is ‘allowed’. Indeed I heard a senior DfE official talk last year about a ‘mergers and acquisitions’ approach to growing academy chains. The most common form of groups of schools working together is a ‘federation’. There are ‘soft’ or ‘hard’ federations but typically these can be community schools. I am aware of secondary schools converting to academy status and then acting as the hub of a group of primaries which all, in due course, convert to academy status.
