Outstanding infant school becoming an academy?

From Caroline:

My children’s infant school is consulting on applying for academy status. It is a large, extremely well run and successful infant school with Outstanding rating from OFSTED. The headteacher is pro-application. Governors have very little sway as compared to head. I feel instinctively nervous about this (what happens when current head retires in next few years? What happens with linked junior school that is not converting? Etc) but would value evidence, experience that will allow me to respond in a more rational way.
