Norwich City Council call on schools to ballot parents before academy decision

Norwich City Council have voted to encourage schools to hold a full consultation and ballot parents if they intend to become an academy.

This is a step that we wouls encourage any council that believes in a democratic process to follow. Any school which is considering becoming an academy should surely feel that a proper democratic process should be followed, rather than a rushed one designed to ignore parent and staff opinions.

The letter sent to the schools says:

“Dear

Schools considering converting to Academy Status

Norwich City Council Cabinet, at its meeting on 9th November passed a resolution to write to all school governing bodies in Norwich, requesting that if schools are considering converting to academies that they carry out a full consultation followed by a secret ballot to determine the school’s future.

Please find enclosed copies of the report with covering letters to you and your governors. Please feel free to make further copies should that be required. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Alan Waters, Deputy Leader, Norwich City Council.”
